Since the 1953 accessory manual & the factory manual doesn't cover this, I've decided to put my own together. The factory manual only covers the 1954/55 1st side carrier which is different from that of the 1953 side carrier. Also, the factory manual leaves out need-to-know dimensions, such as the spacing between the vertical brackets & the stake pocket. The illustrations below are for the 1/2 ton models (the illustrations are also incomplete), though I'm not sure why the 3/4 ton would be any different other than the spacing between the stake pocket & vertical support might not be as critical. I'm going to include more detailed pictures with my side mounted carrier when I'm able to get to that point. This is still a make shift version.
Remove running board to bed apron. Drill corner strip as shown. Set front vertical support on bed. Space as shown. Transfer top hole to bed. Center punch & drill 1/8", then to size 11/32". This is typical for all holes. Screw vertical support onto bed. Mark the other two holes. Make sure to maintain the 1/2" clearance between the stake pocket and the front vertical support. Drill holes. Do the same with the rear support. Holes are 10 7/16" on center. Install vertical supports. Clamp lower horizontal support under bed. Transfer the two holes from the corner strip. Drill to 13/32". Reinstall, mark and drill the two side holes after the top bolts are tight. Install top horizontal reinforcement using the predrilled hole. Mark & drill the last hole. 54-55 carriers use a fender washer. 54-55 install corner bracket. Check all bolts/screws to make sure they are tight.
